Merino wool traps and stores more heat than other wools. Also, unlike other wool underwear, it is extremely comfortable against the skin and is fantastic at absorbing sweat and moisture.
Merino wool also benefits from temperature regulation which means that it is not only extremely warm, but will keep your skin cool if you are over heating.
